The inevitable coexistence of intention and chance is a tension that consistently preoccupies me in life, and something I consistently explore when making. I suppose this might mean that the art I make is about life if it must be about something. I’m not sure that it must.
My work begins with initial decisions being made based on conceptual intent, followed by decisions that will allow for chance to interfere in fortuitous and/or calamitous ways as it happens to do in life. This duality of control and vulnerability seems like an important thing to practice.
Despite a typically geometric non-objective visual vocabulary, I aim to discover and present outcomes that feel intimate and engaging. I tend to like when art functions as an invitation to participate and to see things in different ways, while holding back “content”. Ambiguity asks for our time and reflection.
I find that knowing with certainty is much less intriguing to me than to wonder, to be made curious and speculative. This is a relief as there is so much I don’t and probably can’t ever know. To be fully entrenched in possibilities is a good place to be, and the point of view I find myself making art from.
